SOMETHING STINKS IN THE STATE OF QUEENSLAND!
Both Terry OGorman (Council for civil liberties) and Bill Carter, a former Qld judge, have called for cops not to be allowed to investigate themselves in light of the recent handing down of a CMC report detailing corruption by a large number of Qld Police. No doubt the Palm Island matters have also informed their views.
Mr OGorman also calls for a dedicated section within the CMC to exclusively deal with complaints to take it out of the hands of police and government agencies.
This is something I have been calling for- for a while. The CMC also has responsibilities relating to dealing with major crime. Essentially the CMC relies on cops to assist it with its functions in this regard. This puts the CMC in the same position as the so called police “Ethical Standards Command” when it supposedly carries out investigations into police. They both have a conflict of interest.
I argue that the major crime functions of the CMC should be split from its accountability role so that there is an organisation that has, as its only task, the job of keeping the cops and state free of corruption and other dishonest conduct.
The recent revelations seem to fit with what I have experienced myself in relation to senior officers covering for cops and rumours I have heard when I was locked up - in that police may offer someone a chance to have the court told a person should get a more lenient sentence of they plead guilty to break and enter offences they didn’t commit , so the D’s can clear the backlog. It should be a simple matter to find out.
What I have found through numerous encounters with the ESC is that when police blatantly tell an untruth nothing happens to them . Dale Last, no less, could give a few examples. (its on my site pal !).
People are denying parallels with pre- Fitzgerald days , but I say to them , we have a Labor government in power. They were all high and mighty in the early 90’s about what system they were replacing . But we have dodgy developer deals , corrupt politicians and cops on the nose.
But the Libs and the Nats would be just as bad. And the Police Union? Entirely predictable!
This is why I like these few lines from Shelly’s “Charles the first” because they are relevant to our political system : “...As adders cast their skins and keep their venom, so kings often change; Councils and counsellors hang on one another, hiding the loathsome like the base patchwork of a leper's rags"
